Indonesia, Japan agree to boost cooperation during Tokyo’s meeting

(MENAFN) Indonesia and Japan convened a high-level “2+2” meeting of their foreign and defense chiefs in Tokyo on Monday, using the dialogue to reaffirm their growing strategic partnership and align positions on key regional challenges.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi hosted Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. It was the first such meeting since the inauguration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s new Cabinet last month, underscoring Tokyo’s intent to quickly re-engage regional partners.

According to a statement issued after the talks, the four ministers reviewed ongoing defense and security cooperation, explored new areas for collaboration, and exchanged assessments on regional stability as well as international developments.

Both sides “confirmed their commitment to further reinforcing the cooperation between the two countries with a view to maintaining and strengthening the free and open international order based on the rule of law,” the statement said.

The ministers also discussed several pressing global issues. On the war-torn Gaza Strip, Indonesia and Japan agreed to jointly support “the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza and the realization of a two-state solution.”

Turning to Myanmar, the two sides voiced “serious concern over the deteriorating situation” and pledged to maintain close coordination as the crisis continues to deepen.

Japan and Indonesia have steadily expanded cooperation since establishing diplomatic relations in 1958. Their economic ties remain strong, with two-way trade in goods reaching $35.67 billion in 2024.
